"I really don't like to do back-to-back movies. I concentrate on things at home. My family and school life are important to me. I try to do one movie a year." Anna Chlumsky understands the value of the acting she does, but she also understands that there's more to life than that. She started out in acting as a child, and has kept that career as she's grown up and matured. But the kinds of roles she's undertaken and been interested in have changed, along with the ways in which she approaches the kind of work she does. How did she get started, though, and where's she headed next? Read on to find out more about the talented actress, how her roles as a child affected her, and where she's going with both film and televsion opportunities.
Getting Her Start in Chicago
Chlumsky was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her father was a chef and a saxophone player, while her mother was a singer and actress who had previously worked as a flight attendant. Chlumsky was raised Roman Catholic. She got involved in the entertainment industry as a child, when she was part of an advertising campaign where she modeled with her mother. But it wasn't until she got a role in My Girl (1991) and its sequel in 1994 that people really started to notice her and what she could offer to the acting world. Those roles earned her critical praise and a fan base, and really helped her get her start in show business. But they weren't her only roles. She was in several TV shows, along with a few other films, before she left acting to attend college.
While taking a break from acting, Chlumsky attended the University of Chicago. She graduated from there with a BA in international studies in 2002. She went to work for a publisher, and also worked for Zagat Survey as a fact-checker. But she didn't find the work satisfying, and found that she felt unfulfilled. A chance meeting with Roberta Flack and some other odd occurences made Chlumsky decide to return to acting. She went to Manhattan and attended the Atlantic Acting School, where she got her formal training. While she was ready to return to acting in 2005, Chlumsky didn't get a lot of traction in her roles until 2007 when she had a small part on an episode of Law & Order. From that point, she was back to taking roles and working her way up.
Making a Triumphant Return to the Screen
Chlumsky has worked steadily from the time she decided to return to acting. She has been in guest appearances on TV shows, and has also been on the stage. While she's not being seen on the big screen, her TV roles have kept her busy. Chlumsky's most notable TV role has been on Veep, where she's worked for 65 episodes. But that's not the only TV role she's had. She started appearing in TV movies in 1997, and returned to TV in 2007 after her education was complete. Since that time she's been on shows such as 30 Rock, Army Wives, and Hannibal. She's also been nominated for a number of awards, and won several of them both as a child and as an adult. It's clear that there's much more to what Chlumsky has to offer.
Chlumsky married Shaun So, an Army Reservist, in 2008. The couple met in 2000 when they were students at the University of Chicago. They have two children who were born in 2013 and 2016. Not only has Chlumsky been in movies and on TV, but she's also appeared on Broadway in You Can't Take It With You and other plays. She's also been in off-Broadway productions. While fans will have to wait and see what she does next, it's clear that Chlumsky isn't done with acting in any capacity just yet. Even as a wife and mother, her acting career hasn't slowed down. She has said, "I don't let it bother me too much if someone doesn't like me. I just figure there's no accounting for taste. It's not me, it's my acting. It's like if someone doesn't like someone's food, they just don't like my acting."
It's important to Chlumsky that she doesn't take her acting life or herself too seriously. That way she can enjoy the roles she plays and the characters she portrays, along with still appreciating her home life with her husband and children. With so much to offer, she'll continue to act and be seen in movie and TV roles for the foreseeable future. Fans of Chlumsky can expect to find her in a number of different roles as time goes on, and can expect more from her as she changes and grows as a person and an actress.
