“She loves [her name], she does. Chris named her though, ” Actress, singer, author and lifestyle guru Gwyneth Paltrow said of her daughter, Apple Martin. And while the media made its fair share of jokes about the name when Apple was born, it’s distinctiveness may eventually come in handy as Apple aspires to be a singer-songwriter. Also likely to come in handy? Apple’s dual celebrity parentage of Oscar-winner Paltrow and Coldplay frontman and co-founder Chris Martin.
Indeed, Apple is celebrity royalty in both her mom's native country, the U.S., and England, where her father was born. And while she dreams of following in her father’s footsteps, for now her primary focus appears to be on being a kid. Here’s a closer look at everything you’ve always wanted to know about Apple Martin.
A is for Apple
Apple Blythe Alison Martin was born on May 14, 2004 in London to one of the world’s most beloved couples at the time, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow. Because of her parents’ extraordinary fame, Apple was a celebrity before she was even born. Prior to Apple’s birth, Coldplay -- under the name “The Nappies” -- released the song, “I am Your Baby’s Daddy,” in anticipation of her arrival. After her birth, she inspired yet another song, “Speed of Sound,” which Martin wrote for Coldplay to convey his awe over becoming a father.
While Apple’s fruit-inspired first name may have been met with some mockery, her two middle names are sweet in an entirely different way: They honor her maternal and paternal grandmothers, actress Blythe Danner and music teacher Alison Martin. Apple’s maternal grandfather, the late director-producer Bruce Paltrow, was also an industry icon. As if famous parents and grandparents weren’t enough, Apple also has two famous godfathers: English actor, comedian, screenwriter and producer Simon Pegg and Martin’s Coldplay bandmate, Jonny Buckland. The Martin-Paltrow family was completed with the addition of Apple's younger brother, Moses Bruce Anthony Martin, who was born in 2006 in New York City.
In March of 2014 after a decade of marriage, Martin and Paltrow announced their decision to separate. Paltrow filed for divorce a year later, and the split was finalized in 2016. She said of their “conscious uncoupling” approach, “The idea is you try to do it with minimal acrimony and you say, ‘Look, we have kids, we’re always going to be a family and let’s try to find all the positives in our relationship, all the things that brought us together, the friendship.’”
While it isn’t always easy, the couple works hard to be the best parents they can be to their children. “We actually have a really strong friendship and we laugh and we have fun,” Paltrow told Howard Stern in 2015. “But there are times when it’s really difficult and things happen and you’re like, ‘I’m sure he doesn’t want to hang out with me and I don’t want to hang out with him.’ But for the sake of the kids you do it. But you also don’t do it all tense,” she said.
In addition to being born into fame, Apple was also born into massive wealth. Paltrow has an estimated net worth of a staggering $60 million, while Martin’s net worth is estimated to be twice that at $120 million.
Following In Her Father’s Fabled Footsteps
While Apple makes occasional appearances in tabloid photos and on her mother’s Instagram account, she manages to live her life largely out of the public eye. And while her focus for the time being is on her schoolwork, sources say she dreams of becoming a singer and songwriter like her father someday. Her chances of success look good as Elle reports that she has “her father’s musical talent.” Meanwhile, her proud mom says Apple is “an incredible songwriter.” Apple is also reported to be a talented dancer, prompting some people to suggest that she may have a future career as a professional dance. When Apple isn’t in school, writing songs, or at dance class, she can be found spending time with her family, in the front row of her dad’s shows, and hanging out with her parent’s famous friends, like “Uncle Jay,” AKA Jay-Z.
Apple is also known for her keen resemblance to Paltrow, and the mother-daughter duo appear to be close as evidenced by photos like a 2015 shot of them wearing matching skeleton costumes on Halloween. Apple did push back earlier this year, however, when Paltrow posted a selfie with her daughter on a ski trip. “Mom we have discussed this. You may not post anything without my consent,” Apple commented. (“You can’t even see your face!” her mother responded.)
This exchange may have secretly pleased Paltrow, who has expressed pride over her daughter's ability to stand up for herself and go for what she wants. "My daughter is super ballsy. I always follow her lead. I actually don't need to encourage her to take risks. She likes to push herself; she wants to see how far she can get. It's really inspiring to see that in a young woman," she said.
Meanwhile, Apple has approved several of Paltrow’s Instagram posts, including a recent one in honor of National Daughters Day. “Happy #nationaldaughtersday Apple Martin, it’s like I conjured you from a dream, you make my life,” Paltrow wrote.
Indeed, Paltrow has a history of celebrating her daughter on social media. She also fetted Apple on her 15th birthday with sweet photos and the caption, "Happy 15th birthday my angel @applemartin. I will never be able to put into words how much I love you. You are so strong and so good and so damn funny and soooo gorgeous inside and out. "I am the proudest mama ever. Feliz quinceañera mi vida!"
A year earlier on Apple’s 14th birthday, Paltrow had shared, "Happy birthday, my darling girl. You make everyday feel like Christmas morning. You are the most vibrant, hilarious, twirling all over the place, beautiful (inside and out) young woman. You are an amazing thinker and an incredible songwriter. Thanks for still hanging out with me, even though you are 14."
Speaking of Instagram, Apple does have an account of her own, although -- unlike her mother’s -- it’s not for the public and therefore has a limited follower account of just over 1,000 people. “Apple has a private Instagram and I don’t particularly love it, but this is the world we are in and I don’t want to say you can’t do this,” insists Paltrow. While what the future holds for Apple is uncertain, there’s no doubt that she is the apple of her parents’ eyes, and they’ll do everything they can to support her dreams. On International Day of the Girl, Paltrow raved, "Everything I do in my life I do for this girl (and her brother)."
