“Never seen a ceiling in my whole life." Five-year-old Blue Ivy Carter was heralded as wise beyond her years when she freestyle rapped these words on the bonus track off of the song, "Blue's Freestyle/We Family," from her father JAY-Z’s album, JAY-Z's 4:44. Her meaning, according to most listeners? That she has no limitations and can do anything she wants with her life. As the daughter of the influential rapper, record producer and entrepreneur and singer, songwriter and actress Beyoncé, it’s clear that Blue Ivy is on her way to becoming an icon of female empowerment in her own right.
Blue Ivy Carter may only be in elementary school, but she already boasts some serious star power thanks to the fame and fortune of her parents. Plus, how many seven-year-olds can say they’ve been on top of the iTunes charts? Read on for the scoop on all things Blue Ivy Carter.
A Star is Born
Blue Ivy Carter was born on January 7, 2012. She is the oldest child of Beyoncé & JAY-Z, and has younger twin siblings, Rumi and Sir Carter. Her first name was inspired by her father’s favorite color, while her middle name derives from the Roman numeral, IV.
Blue was famous before she was even born. In fact, her mother announced her pregnancy during a 2011 performance at the 2001 MTV Video Movie Awards, which went on to become MTV’s most-watched award show ever with more than 12.4 million viewers. Just after Blue’s birth, JAY-Z released a single dedicated to his wife and new daughter, “Glory.” Blue Ivy even earned a featured appearance on the track (as “B.I.C.”) because her father included her coos and cries in the song. This earned Blue the distinction of being the youngest-ever artist to claim a spot on the Billboard charts.
Blue currently attends private school in Los Angeles, and is reported to be very close with her mom. An inside source told People magazine, “She is very sassy, high energy and knows what she wants. Especially after the twins [two-year-olds Sir and Rumi] were born, Beyoncé made sure that Blue was able to embrace her new role as a big sister. She also lets her go to video shoots, award shows and music recording. They have a very special bond!”
Blue also takes after her mom in another exciting way: she’s gifted in the arts. The source added, “Of course, both Beyoncé and Blue love music. Blue loves singing, dancing and performing. She is a natural.”
As far as Blue’s squad, her parents have many famous friends with equally famous offspring. According to HELLO! magazine, these have led to second-generation friendships, including between Blue and everyone from Apple Martin to Mariah Carey’s twins, Monroe and Moroccan.
Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, has also shown herself to be a big fan of her granddaughter, announcing that she’d been performing “since birth.” Said Knowles-Lawson of Blue Ivy, “Whatever she wants to do, she will definitely be able to do it, because she’s good at lots of things.”
The Next Beyoncé?
Blue is already a familiar face to Queen B fans. She’s appeared in several of her parents’ music videos -- often dressed in matching attire with her mother -- and has also gone on tour with her mom. Speaking of twinning, Blue and her dad once wore matching monochromatic tuxedos and bow ties to the 2016 CFDA Awards Fashion Icon event, which honored Queen Bey.
Blue also appears in Beyoncé’s new Netflix documentary, Homecoming, which portrays Beyonce not only as an amazing performer, but also as an amazing mom. In the movie, Blue is seen rehearsing choreography with backup dancers and singing the hymnal, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” after which her mom praised the performance. Blue’s enthusiastic response, "I wanna do that again! 'Cause it feels good,” led many viewers to conclude that she aspires to follow in her mother’s footsteps. The documentary also revealed Beyoncé's sweet nickname for her daughter: Baba.
Indeed, Blue Ivy has distinguished herself as a rising star in her own right. In the summer of 2019 when she was just seven, she earned a writing credit for the iTunes chart-topping song, “Brown Skin Girl,” off of her mother’s album, The Lion King: The Gift. (Blue Ivy also appeared in the music video.) Within mere days of its release, the song had earned more than four million plays on the popular streaming platform. It’s successes like these that have led fans to declare Blue Ivy to be “the next Beyoncé.” Blue Ivy also has moves like her mom, as evidenced by leaked footage of the tot stealing the spotlight during a ballet recital.
Recently, Blue Ivy was her mom’s plus-one at the Lion King red carpet premiere, after which Vanity Fair hailed the pair as “the undisputed main attraction” of the event in their coordinating sparkling Alexander McQueen ensembles.
Another talent demonstrated by young Blue? An early and impressive aptitude for makeup artistry. When HELLO! asked him whose makeup techniques he most admired, B's go-to makeup artist, Sir John said, “Well, I have a client who has a seven-year-old daughter and she does immaculate flowing eyeliner. She’s coming for my job.” This is hardly surprising news for a girl known to also have her own stylist and personal shopper. One thing is for certain: whether Blue goes into the music business or something else entirely, she's well-positioned to succeed
Certainly, we’ve only just started to see what Blue Ivy has to offer the world. Meanwhile, Beyoncé’s career continues to soar to new heights, but will always take a distant second to something else: Blue Ivy and her siblings. "Being a mother, my family is my biggest priority," she insists.
