Burke Ramsey was brought into the public spotlight back in 1996, quite against his will, when his young sister passed away via tragic and horrifying circumstances. Despite his youth, he had been only nine at the time, Burke was dragged in front of cameras and paraded around by the media in order to be talked to regarding the recent events.
Now, over twenty years later, Ramsey continues to be dogged by the events of his past, despite him and his family being cleared by investigators for any potential crime. Due to the conspiratorial nature about crime in the public spotlight, it is easy to get wrapped up in conspiracy theories rather than fact. Today, we are going to take a closer look at Burke Ramsey in order to get to know the child who became famous due to the death of his young sister.
A Tragic December
Burke Ramsey was born January 27, 1987, to parents Patsy Ramsey and John Bennett. Not much is known about Burke's father, but Patsy was a former American beauty pageant winner with some serious credits on her resume. Patsy had won Miss West Virginia in 1977 and Patsy's sister, Pamela, would win Miss South Charleston in 1980. John and Patsy met in the '70s, and they would get married on November 5, 1980. Burke would be born first and their daughter, JonBenet, would be born on August 6, 1990.
Shortly after the birth of JonBenet, the entire family picked up and moved to Colorado where John would go on to establish his own business. Patsy would begin helping JonBenet enter into children's beauty pageants. JonBenet would quickly become a little star, much like her mother, as she won several contests before she was six-years-old. Unfortunately, this is where the feel-good portion of the story ends.
On Christmas Day in 1996, JonBenet would go missing. However, she would be found eight hours later in the basement of the Ramsey home. JonBenet had been the victim of a heinous crime and the story would send shockwaves throughout the entire country. The crime made headline news around the nation and a media circus would soon begin to follow the Ramsey family around. Suspicion clouded the entire family though no formal charges were ever brought to the table. In fact, then Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter had refused to put forth charges, citing a complete lack of evidence of familial involvement in the crime. The case would eventually go cold and no charges were ever pressed against anyone, as none of the evidence pointed toward a clear suspect.
Burke had been only nine-years-old at the time, but that didn't stop his name from being brought into the public discussion. Eventually, Burke was cleared of any and all involvement thanks to new technology that analyzed DNA found at the crime scene. In 2008, both of Burke's parents would also be cleared of any wrongdoing.
Burke has stayed out of the public spotlight for over twenty years, returning only once to speak in an interview in 2016.
Breaking His Silence
On the 20th anniversary of that tragic day in December, Burke Ramsey appeared on an episode of Dr. Phil (2016) in order to talk about the case. Having been completely off of the grid during his childhood, after the event, people from all over the world tuned in to hear what the enigmatic man had to say. While the interview came out alongside a three-part mini-series covering the crime, precious little solid information would be presented.
During the interview with Dr. Phil, Burke revealed that his mother had passed away in 2006. He also went on to reveal that he worked from home as a computer analyst. Despite the tragedy that had befallen his childhood, Ramsey talked about finding a path toward a normal life. He talked about getting his own IRA, savings, and house. During his high-school years, Burke revealed that he and his family had to move away from Colorado in order to stay away from their past. He also revealed that he had needed to attend therapy for years in order to help get over the event. Burke admitted that he was awkward, anxious, and aloof both during the height of the hysteria and afterward as he struggled to wrap his mind around what had happened. Ramsey concluded the interview by saying that he had chosen to spoke in honor of his late sister.
After the interview aired in 2016, Burke once again receded into his life away from the public. Burke and his father, John, are the only two surviving members of the family.
