"If something doesn't sit right with you, you got to say no." Christina Applegate is a famous actress who first broke into the pop-culture world as Kelly Bundy on Married ... with Children (1987). Since then, Applegate has managed to cement herself as an enduring performer in the ever-changing Hollywood landscape. Applegate has flexed her comedic chops in projects like Anchorman while also delivering award-winning performances in series like Dead to Me and Samantha Who?
Christina Applegate began working in the entertainment career at a young age, and she has already appeared in 79 films. Applegate is an award-nominated performer with meaty roles in a variety of genres on her resume. Most impressive, perhaps, is the fact that Applegate has continued to work even after having been diagnosed with breast cancer. Having beaten the deadly disease, it seems as if Applegate has only gotten better in her work.
Destined for Hollywood
Christina Applegate was born on November 25, 197, in Los Angeles, California. Applegate's father was Robert William Applegate and her mother was Nancy Lee Priddy. Robert was a famous record producer and record executive while her mother performed as an actress and a singer. Shortly after Applegate was born, her parents would end up getting divorced. As a result, Applegate has a pair of half-siblings from her father's newest marriage.
For Christina Applegate, her childhood was dominated by work in the film industry. Her mother was an active actress and it was through her that she would make her industry debut. Applegate would appear in the soap opera Days of Our Lives as a child before appearing in the 1981 film, Jaws of Satan. It was apparent early on that Applegate had what it took to succeed on camera, so it didn't surprise her mother at all when she chose to focus on the industry full-time.
Accomplished Character Actress
After spending her early years working in commercials and appearing in minor television roles, Applegate finally made it big at the age of 15. Applegate landed the role of Kelly Bundy on Married ... With Children (1987) alongside Ed O'Neill (Modern Family) and Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy). Kelly would become a hit character as the sexually charged young star of the series. The sitcom would become a cultural phenomenon and it would last for an incredible 11 seasons.
While Applegate was focused on Married she didn't have much time to pursue outside work. Still, she would score roles in projects like Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991) and Mars Attacks! (1996). After Married... with Children wrapped, Applegate would begin to focus on larger projects. Applegate would work with Mark Wahlberg on the action-comedy, The Big Hit (1998). She would also nab a role in the comedic Mafia parody, Mafia! (1998) which starred Lloyd Bridges and Jay Mohr.
Applegate would appear in a number of minor roles through the early aughts before landing her breakthrough feature performance in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004). The film co-starred Applegate as an accomplished anchorwoman named Veronica Corningstone. Throughout the film, Applegate has to balance her budding romance with the titular Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrel) with the misogynistic absurdism that surrounded the character. The film would become a smash hit and it would spawn a sequel in 2013, Anchorman 2, in which Applegate would reprise her role.
Suddenly more famous than she had ever been, Applegate turned her post-Anchorman success into a starring role in the series, Samantha Who? (2007). Applegate would land a pair of Golden Globe nominations as well as two Primetime Emmy nominations for her work on the project. The series would run for two years before ultimately being canceled.
In 2008, Applegate would see her life changed forever as she faced a breast cancer diagnosis. Applegate would opt for a double mastectomy in order to address the serious issue. Applegate would endure further operations in order to minimize her risk of any future problems. Due to her experiences, Applegate has since become an outspoken cancer survivor, publicly pushing to raise funds for cancer research.
With her health back on track, Applegate would land a co-starring role in the series Up All Night (2011). She would also appear in Alvin and the Chipmunks (2011) and Hall Pass (2011). Applegate's big year culminated with the birth of her daughter, Sadie Grace. After taking some time to be with her family, Applegate would return to Hollywood in order to appear in The Book of Life (2014), The Muppets (2015), and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (2015). Applegate also saw a second franchise flourish as Bad Moms (2016) was greenlit for a sequel, Bad Moms 2, which released in 2017.
Most recently, Applegate seems completely focused on her work in the hit Netflix series, Dead to Me (2019). The series follows Applegate's character as she reels from the loss of her husband. The dramedy also stars Linda Cardellini, James Marsden, and Max Jenkins. Dead to Me saw its first Primetime Emmy nomination when Christina Applegate was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Applegate is also producing the series with longtime collaborators, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay.
Christina Applegate has also spent a considerable amount of time performing on stage. She appeared in The Axeman's Jazz, The Runthrough, and The Third Day alongside Gena Rowlands. Applegate would make her Broadway debut in 2005 for the production, Sweet Charity. Applegate would score a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.
Christina Applegate began dating Martyn LeNoble in 2009. LeNoble is a bassist with ties to several major bands including P*rno for Pyros, Jane's Addiction, and Thelonious Monster. LeNoble and Applegate would have a daughter in 2011, and they would be married in 2013 at their home in Los Angeles. Applegate is a proud vegetarian and animal rights activist. She has worked extensively with groups like PETA in support of proper animal treatment.
