Would you be my honorary mother?” Dannielynn Hope Marshall Birkhead asks this of her teachers and close friends’ mothers as she continues to grow up in a world with only a single father. She was born in Nassau, Bahamas on September 7, 2006. Her mother was a famous playmate, Anna Nicole Smith. Tragedy fell on the family just three days after Dannielynn’s birth when her brother, Daniel Smith, was found deceased due to an overdose. Dannielynn is the only surviving child of Anna Nicole Smith, who was also found deceased in a Hard Rock Casino in Florida due to an accidental overdose just five months after Dannielynn was born. Despite her tragic beginnings, Dannielynn has a mostly normal childhood and lives with her father, Larry Birkhead, in Kentucky. She is a spitting image of her beautiful mother, and she plans to be a model and actress in the future.
Dannielynn Has Always Been in the Eye of the Media
Ever since her controversial birth story, Dannielynn has been followed by the media. Her mother allowed a video camera into the delivery room, and the resulting the footage sold for $1 million after Anna Nicole Smith’s death. In 2013, a film covering the true story of Dannielynn and Larry Birkhead’s life, Lіfе аftеr Аnnа Nісоlе: Тhе Lаrrу & Dаnnіеlуnn Ѕtоrу, where both Dannielynn and Larry starred as themselves. This helped Dannielynn gain popularity and establish herself as an actress.
Long before the film about her life was released, Dannielynn had already began her career as a model. Paul Marciano, owner of Guess, allowed her to appear in ads for Guess Kids. Marciano stated in a press release, “Dannielynn has the same playful spirit that her mother had on a set.” When asked about Dannielynn’s new hobby, Larry Birkhead replied, “To see her mom's picture next to hers as a Guess girl and say, 'Hey, I was a Guess Kids girl, my mommy was a Guess girl,' that might be her only connection with her mom.”
Her modeling career continues today with new gigs coming her way often. Dannielynn still enjoys being in front of the camera, and has appeared in several roles. Her impressive span of work includes Celebrity Wife Swap, Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, and Inside Edition.
Dannielynn Hope Marshall Birkhead Paternity Case
Anna Nicole Smith and Larry Birkhead met in May 2004 at a major Louisville-area Kentucky Derby Party, the Trish Barnstable Brown Gala. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Larry Birkhead fell in love with Anna Nicole Smith. However, he often described the relationships as dysfunctional and other synonyms. It was common to find them laughing at The War of the Roses dark comedy because it perfectly described their own relationship. Every time Larry tried to leave, Anna convinced him to give their relationship one more try.
During one particular argument, Larry recalled Anna announcing she was pregnant and he was absolutely the father. After six more months of arguing, Anna left Larry and moved to the Bahamas. He still believes it was to prevent him from having a life with his child. He accused Howard K. Stern, Anna’s attorney, for creating and executing the plot.
After her move outside of the United States, Anna announced her pregnancy of her little girl to the world. It was reported that Anna was on multiple prescribed medications during her pregnancy, which raised Larry’s concern while he was thousands of miles away in Los Angeles. Despite the fact the world would later see Dannielynn’s birth on video, Larry was not invited into the delivery room.
For the next year, Dannielynn would be the spotlight of one of Hollywood’s most famous paternity suits. After Anna’s first born child, Daniel, died, she couldn’t keep her mind off of his death despite having her beautiful newborn daughter in her arms. It was reported from security in the house that Daniel overdosed on prescribed medications he stole from his mother's medicine cabinet. Anna was so broken by his death that she crawled into his casket during his funeral.
When Dannielynn was three days old, her half-brother, Daniel Wayne Smith, died while visiting his mother at the maternity ward. It was later revealed that the 20-year-old had accidentally overdosed on his mother’s prescribed medications. Birkhead stated that according to the security in the house, Daniel had stolen his mother’s medicines.
During this time, it became evident to Larry that Anna was in no condition to care for Dannielynn. However, he had to prove he was the father in order to give his daughter the life she deserved. This proved difficult since Anna listed Howard K. Stern, Anna’s attorney, as Dannielynn’s father on October 11, 2006.
Discrepancies over the birth certificate quickly rose since another attorney, Dion Smith, Jr., wrote his own name where Howard K. Stern’s signature was supposed to appear. Since the official document did not have the correct signatures, it rendered the certificate invalid. Obtaining a new certificate and DNA test became a seemingly impossible matter for Larry Birkhead.;
Sad news arose on February 8, 2007 that Anna Nicole Smith had overdosed. After 12 days, Larry Birkhead put in a petition to the court on February 20 to ask for Howard K. Stern to submit DNA samples to prove he was Dannielynn’s father. The judge did allow for tests to be performed to determine who was the actual father, but they were not allowed to begin until after Anna’s funeral.
Once it was known the tests were going to be performed, many different individuals came forth and claimed they were Dannielynn’s father, including Frederic Prinz von Anhalt (Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband), Mark Hatten, Alexander Denk, and many more.
The best news came to the Birkhead family on April 10, 2007 - Larry Birkham was Dannielynn’s biological father. The test had been conducted on March 21st. Larry legally changed his daughters name to Dannielynn Hope Marshall Birkhead and decided to provide her with a normal childhood in Kentucky. He does her best to keep her out of the media’s line of sight while supporting her endeavours to become a model and actress.
