"As a part of my audition for the role of the feral kid, I was asked to give my impression of how I came to live in the wastelands." If you were a child in the 80s, you definitely tuned into Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in order to see Mel Gibson tear it up in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. While you were watching The Road Warrior, you no doubt saw the Feral Kid played by Emil Minty. While Minty didn't have any lines in the film, he definitely left an impression on the audience.
Emil Minty is a retired Australian child actor. He is most well-known for his performance as The Feral Kid in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Before turning away from Hollywood, Minty would appear in several other projects.
The Feral Kid
Emil Minty was born in Australia in 1972. Despite being a semi-famous actor, Minty has been notoriously quiet about his early life, childhood, and relationships. Minty hasn't even released his official birthday to the public. With that being said, we know that Minty was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. Due to his location, as well as his affinity for acting, Minty was an early favorite to play the role of The Feral Kid in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. The film was already being put together in Australia, so Minty had a leg-up on his competition.
Minty's audition process for Mad Max 2 is probably as interesting as his actual part. When Minty was called into the studio in order to audition for producers, he was asked to improv a complete storyline for his character. Minty worked with his father in order to come up with a tragic backstory. Minty and his father developed a story that revolved around The Feral Kids' family emergency-landing their plane while flying over the wasteland. Forced to land due to a lack of fuel, The Feral Kids' father had to leave to find help. After he didn't return, his mother went after him. When neither family came back, The Feral Kid was born.
According to Minty, he was in love with the production side of the entertainment world. Minty recalled how much he loved getting into makeup and costume before performing for the production crew. Minty also recalled how much fun he had playing around in all of the classic cars that were used during the production of the film.
Career Changes
While Emil Minty definitely left an impression with his performance in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, his career was not long for the road. Minty would appear in several other films following his debut in the 1981 wasteland-themed film. Minty would appear in Fluteman in 1982 before appearing in The Winds of Jarrah (1983) and Winners (1985). During this period of time, Minty would also be juggling his education with his acting career, causing both to suffer.
Before deciding to shift away from the world of acting, Minty would land two other notable roles. First, Minty would land a starring role in the 1987 series, The Haunted School as Patrick McCormick. The series also starred Carol Drinkwater and James Laurie. Minty would also star in A Country Practice from 1989 to 1990 as Danny Laylor. A Country Practice follows the people of Wandin Valley. The sprawling TV drama was on the air from 1981 until 1993 with an ever-changing cast of characters and performers.
After Minty graduated from school, he made the conscientious decision to turn away from acting. Rather than trying to pursue a career in Hollywood by moving to America, Minty would end up becoming a jeweler. Minty has worked at Chris Lewis Jewelers in Gladesville since the beginning of the 90s. With over 30 years as a manager, it doesn't look like Minty has any plans of leaving to pursue acting in the future. Minty also works for Gear Zone where he helps customers find the right tools torches, and watches to fit their needs.
In his personal life, Minty has been happily married to Isabella Minty. Isabella and Minty have two children together, a daughter named Petra and a son named Jacob. According to Minty, he would be nothing more than a 'shell of a man, a burnt-out desolate man' without his family. Minty is, of course, alluding to the famous line uttered by the infamous Road Warrior. While Minty has not been contacted to reprise his role in any of the future Mad Max films, he has been vocal about his support of the franchise as well as where it is heading in the future.
