“You’re either in or you’re out. Right now.” Thankfully, the Cincinnati Reds had no interest in signing a young baseball player by the name of George Clooney in 1977, which left the young athlete to pursue his second passion—acting. Making his way to Hollywood shortly after, Clooney landed his first acting role as an extra in the 1978 mini-series Centennial. By the 1980s, he was enjoying his first taste of fame with appearances on shows like The Facts of Life, Roseanne and The Golden Girls while perfecting his skills at the Beverly Hills Playhouse acting school.

Clooney’s patience and hard work finally paid off in 1994 when he was cast as the charming Dr. Doug Ross on the hit NBC medical drama ER alongside Julianna Margulies and Noah Wyle. Becoming a household name on primetime television over the next six years, Clooney parlayed his success on television into a massively successful movie career. After starring in films like From Dusk till Dawn and One Fine Day, he sealed his fate as an A-lister when he was cast as the Dark Knight in Batman & Robin, which catapulted his career into much bigger projects.

Since then, Clooney has cashed in on his outstanding talent and his incredible good looks with a string of blockbusters including the Ocean’s trilogy as well as Michael Clayton, Gravity and Up in the Air. Often considered one of the sexiest men in Hollywood and named by Time magazine as one of the “Most Influential People in the World,” Clooney has earned eight Academy Award nominations with wins for Best Supporting Actor in Syriana and as a producer for Argo.

Considered among the Hollywood elite after nearly four decades in the spotlight, Clooney is one of the few actors anyone ever suspected of getting plastic surgery especially after his comments in 2015. When asked if he would ever consider plastic surgery to improve his look, he replied, “Clearly I haven’t.” But, his comments didn’t stop there. “I’ve seen [plastic surgery] happen—particularly on men—and I don’t think it really works,” he continued. “I think it actually makes you look older. I’m a big believer in the idea that you can’t try to look younger. You just have to look the best you can at the age you are.”

Leaving many to believe that he was ready to age naturally and accept it for what it was, Clooney’s stance on the issue became even more evident. “I think for all of us, you have to come to terms with getting older and not try to fight it… You have to get used to the idea that your roles in films and who you are and how you’re perceived are going to change and that’ll disappoint people at times.”

While Clooney’s honesty on aging struck a chord with many, it left others suggesting that he was a hypocrite for judging men for having a few nips and tucks especially after his own experience. So, what did the Syriana star have done? Early in his career, Clooney decided to fix an ongoing problem with grinding his teeth, which had made them look shorter. To correct the issue, he opted for laser surgery to heighten his gums and expose more of his teeth. He also had them bleached and straightened with veneers added as necessary.

Whether Clooney’s stance on plastic surgery makes him a hypocrite or not, it has certainly become a hot button issue for Clooney at home especially when it comes to his wife, the gorgeous Amal Alamuddin. Tabloids reported that Amal had undergone several plastic surgery procedures and Botox injections, much to the dismay of her husband. “Amal certainly looks younger,” one surgeon said. “Her under eyes look fuller, maybe from fillers or perhaps eye surgery, including repositioning fat under her eye.”

Rumors went wild that Clooney was ready to cave and go under the knife himself but Amal objected. Although the rumors were denied by all parties involved, one source said, “George can’t stand how old he looks” and that Amal flipped out when he suggested cosmetic surgery. “[She told him] that he was being vain and warned him that messing with his face could actually make him look older,” to which he replied, “Wait until you’re my age.”

Today, the 55-year-old Clooney certainly doesn’t look his age, which has left many to wonder if the rumors of a neck lift are true especially since he’s often seen with facial hair that could easily mask any scars. Then again, his youthful glow could be from finding love after all these years. Whatever the case, it’s safe to say that nothing has harmed Clooney’s career as he’s one of the richest actors in the world with a $200 million net worth and plenty of opportunities on the horizon to keep him in the spotlight for years to come.
