"The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane." These are wise words from someone so young, but as the daughter of Eminem (Marshall Mathers), Hailie Jade Scott Mathers has learned a lot in a short period of time. Born in Detroit, Michigan, her parents are Eminem and Kimberly Anne Scott. Hailie has two siblings -- Alaina Marie Mathers and Whitney Scott Mathers. Eminem didn't become a big star until the late 1990s, and at the time of Hailie's birth in 1995 he was still up and coming.
That meant some struggles for the young famliy, as they didn't always have enough money and times could be stressful. As Eminem became more successful and the financial situation improved, He, Kim, and Hailie had more money to do things. There was tension in the relationship between her parents, but they both worked very hard to make sure Hailie's upbringing was as normal as possible. Now that Hailie is older, she's started focusing on a career of her own and has acquired thousands of followers on social media sites like Instagram and Twitter.
Famous Parents Mean Famous Children
When Hailie's parents met they were still in high school. Kim and her sister ran away in 1987, and they stayed with Eminem's family for a while. During that time a relationship developed. Hailie was born in 1995, and in 1999 Eminem and Kim married. In 2001 they divorced. They remarried in January of 2006, but by April of that same year Eninem had once again filed for divorce. Throughout their differences, they were always focused on making sure Hailie and her siblings had what they needed.
Whitney was Kim's daughter from a different relationship and was adopted by Eminem. Alaina Marie was actually her cousin but was also adopted by Eminem, making her a sibling. Many children of celebrities are home-schooled, but Hailie attended Chippewa Valley High School. She played volleyball there, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She graduated from high school Summa Cum Laude, and went on to attend Michigan State University. Her actual degree path is not clear, but it's believed to be either entrepreneurship or psychology.
When she was very young, Hailie had a typical, normal childhood. Her parents weren't always together, but they were always committed to giving her as much normalcy as possible. Her father pushed hard to get into the music business and make a name for himself. Eventually, he gained fame. Through that, Hailie also gained some fame, as well. When Eminem released Hailie's Song (2002), his daugher started to get noticed. The song was about his joy and happiness when he gained custody. The 2004 song Mockingbird was also about Hailie and his regret over not always being there for her when she was growing up.
Developing a Following of Her Own
Even though she's still mentioned in her father's songs on a regular basis, Hailie is also developing a following of her own. In 2005, Eminem wrote When I'm Gone, for Hailie. Two 2017 songs, Castle, and Arose were also written for her. She has always been a strong inspiration for his music, and she remains so. But she's also becoming an inspiration for others as they start to follow her on social media. More than just taking selfies or tweeting about what she did that day, Hailie also offers valuable information about what it's like to grow up famous and how hard it can sometimes be when trying to be "normal" instead of a celebrity.
Like most people in her age group, Hailie wants to do things her way, develop her skills and talents, and have an identity of her own. That's not always easy when famous parents are involved, but Hailie takes it seriously and is willing to address what it's like to grow up with fame. Additionally, she's intelligent and focused on her studies in ways that many celebrity children aren't. She has the opportunity to go far in life, whether she chooses a career like her father's or decides to do something that takes her further away from the spotlight.
As a social media inifluencer, she can reach out to others and give them guidance and information. Everything from fashion advice to how to handle college can be offered by a social media influencer, and Hailie has the chance to be a part of something bigger than herself and her generation. With Twitter and Instagram as her platforms, Hailie's influence can go far and be valuable and beneficial to society.
