"I think retirement's for old people. I'm still in the business, thank you. I have a young child of nine years old, and I want to live as long as I can to see him grow up. I'm enjoying my life and I want to stick around for as long as I can." Harrison Ford is, perhaps, one of the most iconic performers of all time. Known for his gruff demeanor, Ford came into stardom for his work on the legendary series, Star Wars. After making it as one of the most iconic characters of all time, Ford would land another once-in-a-lifetime role as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Since his hey-day in the 70s and 80s, Ford has continued to stick around as one of the most dedicated performers in the industry. Ford came from unlikely origins in order to ascend to the top of the A-List. After struggling as an actor and briefly taking on a job in carpentry, Ford would bust out of his shell in a big way. With 80+ roles over a 50+ year period, Ford truly is one of the greats.
Born in Chicago
Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. Ford was born at the Swedish Covenant Hospital to Christopher Ford and Dorothy Ford. Dorothy was a retired radio actress at the time of Harrison's birth while Christopher Ford worked as an advertising executive. Harrison was brought into a Catholic-Jewish household where he was raised alongside his younger brother, Terence. When asked about his early years, Ford jokes that he was raised 'Democrat' in order to 'be liberals of every stripe'.
Ford spent an active and exciting childhood as a member of the Boy Scouts of America. He would go on to work as a camp counselor at Napowan Adventure Base. Ford attended to his studies at Maine East High School until his graduation in 1960. From there, Ford would go on to attend Ripon College located in Wisconsin. After briefly studying philosophy, Ford would transition to studying drama as a way of getting over his internalized 'shyness'. Ford would head to Los Angeles in 1964 where he would begin pursuing his entertainment career in earnest.
A Hollywood Legend
Harrison Ford would begin his career by venturing to Hollywood in order to pursue work in radio. While he didn't land any work as a radio host, Ford would be signed to a developmental program with Columbia Pictures. As a result, Ford would be paid $150-per-week in exchange for bit parts in a variety of projects. Ford's first titled role was as a bellhop in the 1966 film, Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round. Ford would land a number of bit roles throughout the late 60s, including parts in The Virginian (1966), A Time for Killing (1967), and The F.B.I. (1969). During this period of his life, Ford began to work as a carpenter in order to make ends meet.
On the brink of giving up, Ford would see his life changed after scoring the part of Bob Falfa in the George Lucas project, American Graffiti (1973). Ford would struggle to gain much momentum, but he and Lucas would reunite in 1977 for the iconic film, Star Wars. Ford was cast as the rogue smuggler, Han Solo, and in doing so, he would become an international star. Ford would appear in the Francis Ford Coppola film The Conversation (1974) as well as Apocalypse Now (1979).
Now fully immersed into the pop-culture world, Ford was on the brink of absolute stardom. Ford would reprise his hit role as Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). Along the way, Ford would spawn another mega-franchise with Steven Spielberg thanks to his work in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) as Indiana Jones.
