During O'Hara's early childhood, she spent much of her time with her mother as her parents had divorced. For much of her early years, the O'Hara children watched as their mother pursued a career in the arts. Eventually, Edith O'Hara would establish her own children's theater in Warren, PA, where she would run classes and productions for youth in the area. All the O'Hara siblings spent time performing at the theater.

After finishing high-school, O'Hara would end up spending time at Carnegie Tech which is now included under the Carnegie-Mellon University moniker. During her time in Pittsburgh, O'Hara would work on several stage productions at school. O'Hara also spent a summer working in stock theater. Eventually, O'Hara would move to New York in order to study under Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg. A few years later, O'Hara would land a role in the Broadway production of Dylan at the local Plymouth Theatre. O'Hara would star across from Sir Alec Guinness in Dylan before going on to star alongside Dorothy Loudon in The Fig Leaves Are Falling in 1969.

Making it in Hollywood

While O'Hara had spent much of her career working on the stage, she would be the first of her siblings to make it onto television. While Jill O'Hara was working on her Tony-nominated production, Promises, Promises, O'Hara was making her entertainment debut in Murder a la Mod (1968). O'Hara would follow that production up with almost twenty television appearances over the following decade. One of O'Hara's early career highlights was a three-year role on Barnaby Jones (1976) and The Facts of Life (1979).

Throughout the 70s and 80s, O'Hara would cement herself as one of the hardest working character performers in the industry. She would appear in nearly 40 credits by the time that the 80s rolled around. In the late 80s, O'Hara would land the biggest role of her career as Dixie Randazzo on My Sister Sam (1986). The series followed a photographer from San Francisco moving to Oregon to live with her family. The show was nominated for a Primetime Emmy and O'Hara's work was widely lauded.
