"This business is so unstable, and you never really know where you're going to be." That may be true, but Katie Holmes has always seemed to be in the spotlight. From her role as Joey Potter on Dawson's Creek (1998-2003) through her high-profile marriage to Tom Cruise, she's been a part of Hollywood for some time. It doesn't look like that's slowing down, either, as there are more film roles for her in the future. In 1997, before landing the TV role, Holmes made her film debut in The Ice Storm. She has been in many other films since that time, and has made a name for herself based on her talent and work ethic.
Some of her more notable roles include Wonder Boys (2000), Pieces of April (2003), Batman Begins, (2005), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010), and Jack and Jill (2011), among others. She also had a very public, six-year marriage to Tom Cruise, and the celebrity super couple was nicknamed "TomKat" by many members of the press. In 2016 she starred in All We Had, which she also directed. She has been on Broadway in All My Sons (2008), and in the TV miniseries The Kennedys (2011). In 2017 she reprised her role of Jacqueline Kennedy in The Kennedys: After Camelot. How did she get to all that? Read on to find out.
A Hard-Working Girl With Family Roots
Holmes was born the youngest of five, in Toledo, Ohio. Her mother was a philanthropist and homemaker, and her father was a lawyer. She was one brother and three sisters, and was raised Roman Catholic. She attended the Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, and graduated with a 4.0 average. Her mother had also attended the school. She was acting in high school, playing roles in Damn Yankees and Hello, Dolly! at all-male schools in the local area. She attended Columbia University for a summer session and her father was hoping she'd become a doctor.
At the age of 14, Holmes started classes at a Toledo modeling school. That led her to being in a modeling competition in 1996 in New York City. She was signed to an agent after her performance of a monologue. That led to her audition tape, that went to the casting director for her first film. She was then asked to audition for other parts, but she wanted to finish high school. She was allowed to audition for Dawson's Creek through a videotape, so she didn't have to turn down other commitments at that time.
She has said, "I work very hard, but I also really enjoy time with my family as well. So I take everything as it comes, but I really am very selfish about my family time." She has remained this way throughout her life, both with her family and her close friends. She takes her commitments seriously, and she did that in high school, as well, when she auditioned via video tape so she could still act in her school play. That work ethic and dedication to others has been a part of why Holmes has done so well throughout her career, and why she is so loved and appreciated by others in Hollywood, as well.
A Very Public Career and Personal Life
From 2003 to 2009, Holmes worked steadily in film and theater with only a brief hiatus. Not all of her films were successful, and she has jokingly claimed that her career has been a string of bombs. While that's actually not the case, and Holmes has been in many successful films and TV shows, she has also been able to see that there are some roles that may not have been as valuable as others to her overall career. "With age, I've gained confidence," she says. Now she's willing to challenge herself more, and take on roles that she might not have chosen in the past, because she knows much more about who she is.
Holmes' marriage to Tom Cruise was extremely public, and the couple became engaged after only dating for seven weeks. They married, and Holmes converted to Cruise's religion of Scientology. After their divorce, Holmes returned to the Catholic Church. She also retained custody of their daughter, Suri. Her public image was largely unaffected by the marriage and divorce, and she continued working in Hollywood and on the stage. She also worked on adapting a novel entitled Rare Objects into a screenplay in 2016.
Throughout her career, Katie Holmes has also been a spokesperson and "brand face" for several companies. Holmes has been the face of Ann Taylor in 2011, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 2013, and Alterna Haircare in 2013, as well. Her filmography is extensive, and doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon. All indications are that Holmes will continue to dazzle Hollywood for a very long time.
