"What saddens me is the corruption of youth and beauty, and the loss of soul, which is only replaced by money." Lisa Bonet is an American-born actress who is most well-known for her role as Denise Huxtable on the hit program, The Cosby Show. Despite most of her famous work occurring in the late 80s and early '00s, Lisa Bonet has continued to make an impact on the world of pop-culture.
Lisa Bonet is a free-spirited entertainer who has never been afraid of doing things her own way. She has been in the spotlight throughout her life for both her work on stage and her relationships off of it. Notably, Lisa Bonet eloped with rock-legend Lenny Kravitz before having her first child, Zoe Kravitz. Since then, Bonet has married Aquaman and Game of Thrones star, Jason Momoa. Lisa and Jason have two children together.
Bonet has had a career in the entertainment industry that has spanned from 1982 to the present day. As an at-times controversial figure, Bonet has a life story that is truly worth your attention.
Growing Up in San Francisco
Despite being a mega-star in the 80s, Lisa Bonet has managed to keep a significant portion of her childhood out of the public spotlight. What we do know is that Lisa Bonet was born on November 16, 1967, in the great city of San Francisco, CA. Bonet is the daughter of Arlene and Allen Bonet. Her father was African-American while her mother was Jewish, which resulted in her being a biracial child. In the early 80s, according to Lisa, "The world wasn't ready for what I represented, the merging of these two races." Bonet goes on to say that she didn't always feel welcomed or appreciated both at school or in her own home. As a result, Bonet admits that she has always withheld a part of herself from the people around her.
Lisa's parents would split up while she was still just a baby. However, both Allen and Arlene managed to leave quite the impression on their shared child due to their creative backgrounds. Bonet would spend significant portions of her childhood auditioning and appearing on television. Bonet would land her role on The Cosby Show (1984) at the age of 17. It wasn't long before Bonet was attending the Celluloid Actor's Studio in North Hollywood after completing her high-school education in Van Nuys, CA. Bonet majored in acting because she felt 'safe' within the world of performing arts.
Despite her relative resistance to life in the public eye, there is much to learn about what made Lisa Bonet the performer that she is today.
Meet Denise Huxtable
In spite of a rocky childhood, Bonet was able to put her troubles behind her while performing on The Cosby Show (1984 – 1991). After scoring the role of Denise Huxtable, Bonet would go on to star in 119 episodes over a seven-year span. During that time, Bonet would earn her own spinoff show, A Different World (1987), which showed Denise heading off to college. It soon became clear that the squeaky clean image of Denise Huxtable was starting to chafe and Bonet would begin to pursue more complicated work.
Bonet would make her silver-screen debut in 1987 when she played the steamy role of Epiphany Proudfoot in Angel Heart. Bonet starred opposite of a surging Mickey Rourke, and she went to places that changed her wholesome image forever. Bonet says of her decision to play racier roles, "My obligation wasn't to Denise (Huxtable). I felt obligated to myself and my career."
As Bonet developed a more outspoken personality, she began to but heads with Bill Cosby. Bonet wasn't happy with the way The Cosby Show had developed, and she certainly did not enjoy A Different World (1987 – 1989). Shortly after wrapping up her work on A Different World, Bonet would meet the rockstar known as Lenny Kravitz. At 20-years-old, Bonet and Kravitz would elope and within a year they'd be welcoming their only daughter into the world, Zoe. Bonet's pregnancy would result in her termination from both A Different World and The Cosby Show. Before being fired, Bonet would score an Emmy Award nomination for her work on The Cosby Show.
In the early 90s, Bonet would direct two music videos including her husband's video, 'Stand By My Woman'. In 1993, Bonet and Kravitz would call it quits. Lenny and Lisa still maintain a healthy relationship to this day. The former couple will still routinely get together to enjoy holidays with their daughter, Zoe. Lisa says that their relationship together was an 'accelerated time' from both a 'spiritual' and 'intellectual' perspective.
In 1995, Bonet would legally change her name to Lilakoi Moon though she would preserve her stage name. After her successful string of TV shows began to dry up, Bonet began to focus full-time on working in the film world. She would score a supporting role across from Will Smith in Enemy of the State (1998). Bonet would follow up that blockbuster role with an appearance in the critically acclaimed film, High Fidelity (2000).
Lisa Bonet first met her husband, Jason Momoa, at a jazz club in Los Angeles back in 2004. The two had instant chemistry despite the 13-year age difference between the two actors. Bonet says of Momoa, "He's a leader; he's generous. Just in terms of charisma, physique, the right use of power, responsibility and work ethic, you can go down the line." Bonet and Momoa would begin dating in 2004, and they would welcome two children into the world together, Lola Iolani (2007) and Nakoa-Wolf (2008). Lisa and Jason made their marriage official after 13-years of dating when they tied the knot in October 2016.
Outside of her work on stage, Bonet has maintained a relatively low-profile. She currently resides in Los Angeles with her family. Bonet most recently appeared on television with a regular role on the show, Ray Donovan (2016) as Marisol.
