Bialik is known as much for her work on television as she is for her work off of it. Bialik possesses a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of California. With her scientific background, Bialik was revered for bringing some truth to the lighthearted Big Bang Theory. While Bialik is most well-known for her modern work, she has actually been performing in the entertainment industry since the late '80s.

While Bialik is proud of her work in the scientific field, she has been vocal about how little the work actually pays. Bialik purportedly returned to acting because her health insurance had run out, and she could no longer support her children.  Bialik is also a prominent activist, feminist, and vegan. She has been awarded an honorary degree from Boston University.

Acting in the 80s

Mayim Bialik was born on December 12, 1975, in San Diego, California. Bialik would be raised in Los Angeles where she would quickly begin to pursue work as an actor. Her mother was raised by Eastern European immigrants who had never spoken English before setting foot in the country. As a result, Bialik calls her family 'very old country'. Her father was born and raised in America, yet their religion and shared history made a positive impact on their family's culture while growing up.

Bialik has always made her faith a prominent part of her public persona. Bialik was raised in a 'Reform-style synagogue' as a child, though she would not depart from her mother's own orthodox ways. Bialik recalls setting the dishes, speaking Yiddish, and lighting candles during the Holidays. Bialik says that her Bat Mitzvah was a profound moment in her life.

Outside of her religious background, Bialik was quick to enter into the acting world. She began pursuing the arts as a child, and she would make her television debut in 1987.  From that point forward, Bialik would embark on an iconic career that includes 55 credits and 25 award nominations. Before Bialik got to that point, however, she would attend Walter Reed Junior High School until 1993. By this point in her life, she was already beginning to act and as such would need to take a break from her studies. However, Bialik would return to college at UCLA in order to earn her Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2007.

In 2003, Bialik would marry Michael Stone in an elaborate ceremony. Stone would convert to Judaism for the wedding. The couple would have two children together, Miles and Frederick, though they would divorce in 2012. Bialik is currently not seeing anyone.

Finding the Big Bang Theory

Mayim Bialik would jump into her acting career with aplomb, landing feet first in a role for the horror flick, Pumpkinhead (1988). Pumpkinhead would be her first job but Bialik would quickly transition to life on television. Bialik appeared on The Facts of Life (1988) and Webster (1988) with multi-episode arcs.  Bialik also recalls that her work on the Beauty and the Beast (1987) TV show would make her popular with kids her age. She had ten total lines of dialogue in the show and was thus able to get her SAG card.

While Bialik struggled to find stable footing early on in her career, she was always able to find a new project. When her starring role on Fox's Molloy (1990) was canceled, she was able to land a large role in the Woody Allen film, Don't Drink the Water (1994).  The film would garner mostly positive reviews and Bialik was able to be more flexible with the work that she pursued in the years to come.
