Your child becomes the #1 priority,” said cultural phenomenon Kim Kardashian following the birth of her daughter, North West. Today, North may be the world’s chicest elementary schooler, which isn’t exactly a surprise given that her parents are Kardashian and rap superstar Kanye West.

When Kim Kardashian and Kanye West announced at the end of 2012 that they were expecting their first child together, the world started counting down to the baby’s arrival. On June 15, 2013, North made her way into the world in Los Angeles, California. Her birth -- described by one insider as a "scary" medical emergency -- was not without its share of drama: She was born five weeks early weighing less than five pounds. She remained in the hospital for her first week of life with the doctors monitoring her health status. It wasn’t until Kardashian and her new baby checked out of the hospital that the world learned her unusual name: North West. Today, North is big sister to two brothers and a sister: Saint, Psalm and Chicago. Her grandmother, Kris Jenner, is also a big part of her life and upbringing. 

From the moment North made her debut to the world, she was a paparazzi magnet, but her first official appearance was on her grandmother’s talk show. At the age of just 10 months,  North was photographed with her parents, AKA “Kimye,” by Annie Leibovitz for Vogue. Even at that young age, North was already a fashionista. “I take pictures of her all the time and dress her up,” said Kim. “I put Kanye’s big chains around her, and I put a little Louis bag and some Jordans, and I was like, ‘What up, Daddy?’”

Celeb watchers had to wait until North was two, however, to see her become a familiar face on her mom’s reality program, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. In fact, when North was a baby, West refused to let the show film her. Because of this, viewers only caught the occasional peek of her baby carrier or stroller. 

North may be small, but, along with her brothers and sister, she’s set to inherit a massive fortune. Her mom’s net worth has been reported to be in the neighborhood of $350 million, and was ranked number 54 on Forbes’ annual list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women thanks to the success of her makeup brand, KKW Beauty.  Kanye West’s net worth, meanwhile, is reported to be $250 million due not only to his music career, but also to his booming Yeezy sneaker empire.

A Tiny-Trendsetter

North West has already gained a reputation as a trendsetter. One example? While many people would sell their souls for a single pair of Yeezys, West apparently had every pair custom-made for North when she was just two.

According to Kardashian, North is also fascinated by makeup. "She had friends over this weekend and some of her girlfriends came and they were just all in her room, giving themselves makeovers. I was like, OK, she’s really, really into makeup. When companies send makeup and I have a lot, I’ll give it to her." Aside from a few guidelines, including steering North away from dark lipstick and false eyelashes,  Kardashian has a liberal outlook toward her daughter's use of makeup. “It is a form of expression. So I want her to express herself, but I want her to be appropriate, too,” she told Refinery29.

Yeezys and makeup collection aside,  Kardashian insists that North and her siblings aren’t spoiled. "I worry about giving my kids too much. We don't do gifts. They have to really earn it. But we talk about it all the time, about not getting too much and just trying to be as grounded and well-rounded as possible,” she wrote in a 2018 essay for Wealthsimple. 

The words “North” and “normal” may seem like an unlikely pairing, but North does enjoy many of the same things other kids do, including taking ballet. She attends class with her cousin and best friend, Penelope, the daughter of Kim’s sister Kourtney Kardashian and her ex, Scott Disick. 

Still, growing up in the spotlight has uniquely equipped North to deal with the paparazzi. In fact, she was once firmly observed telling photographers, “No pictures.”   And while North West doesn’t yet have social media accounts of her own, she’s already "Instagram famous" thanks to her mom's powerful presence. 

Speaking of pictures, North also recently landed her first solo magazine cover on WWD’s Beauty Inc. Wrote the magazine of the young star’s impressive stature, “Without a public Instagram or YouTube channel of her own, she's too young to fully understand what a digital footprint is. And yet, hers is already wildly popular.  West, whether she knows it or not, is at the forefront of a generation that is highly connected, engaged with fashion and beauty and individualistic in style."

While it’s too early to predict what the future will hold for North West, it’s clear she’ll have the love and support of her parents along the way. Says Kardashian, "I have such unconditional love for my kids. No matter what, I will always love them and support them in anything they choose to do in life. My family was so close growing up; now that I'm a mom, I understand the bond my mom and dad felt with us. There can be ups and downs with kids but no matter what, I always learn so much from them. Being a mom is the most important job I have."
