“They call me Dr. Love (calling Dr. Love). I’ve got the cure you’re thinking of (calling Dr. Love).” Growing up in Queens, New York where he was immersed in classical music and light opera throughout his childhood, Paul Stanley’s passion for music continued to grow long after he received his first guitar at only seven years old. Despite his obvious talent as a graphic artist and his success at the High School of Music & Art in New York City, Stanley set aside his drawing skills in exchange for the guitar after finding inspiration in a variety of musicians from Beethoven to The Beatles and even The Rolling Stones.
After playing with a handful of bands in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a mutual friend introduced Stanley to Gene Simmons who invited him to join his band, Wicked Lester. Shortly after, the duo decided to form their own group and responded to an advertisement from Peter Criss in Rolling Stone magazine where they also met Ace Frehely. With the band finally complete, the four donned wild makeup and costumes as they took the stage belting out hits like “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Beth,” “Calling Dr. Love” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” as the iconic rock band known as KISS.
Adopting “The Starchild” character for his KISS persona, Stanley was the youngest member of the band, which might be a hard pill to swallow if you’re a rock ‘n’ roll fan from the 1970s. But, even though Stanley is quickly approaching his 65th birthday, he still looks much younger than most people his age especially after spending the last five decades standing center stage. Perhaps his fresh face can be attributed to good genes, but most rock fans believe that The Starchild has had some help hiding those pesky wrinkles.
A few years ago, Stanley showed signs of aging and sagging skin around his eyes and neck but, today, his appearance has dramatically changed! At the time, Stanley confirmed that he had gone under the knife but denied that it was for anything cosmetic. Instead, he reported that he was dealing with numerous injuries to his knees and shoulders, which he had repaired to ensure he could keep rocking out on stage in front of sold-out crowds. Of course, after fans noticed the differences in his face, they were far less interested in his knees and begged for juicy gossip about his new look! So, what happened?
In 2014, Stanley’s face appeared to be magically lifted with absolutely no signs of the sagging skin around his neck that had been there the year before. Instead, the skin around his forehead and eyes were fuller and smoother leaving many fans to believe that The Starchild opted for plastic surgery. “Wow! Talk about too many facelifts and Botox,” one fan tweeted as others made comments like “Is that a mask he’s wearing?” and “Paul should sue his plastic surgeon for malpractice.”
Over the last few years, criticism over Stanley’s “younger” look has continued with fans saying he “should have kept the makeup on.” However, nothing has ignited a confession from the rocker who swears he has only had surgery on his knees, shoulders and vocal cords after years of giving epic rock performances. In fact, he denies ever going under the knife for anything cosmetic despite the obvious arch in his eyebrows suggesting a brow lift and his new interest in wearing hats, which many critics argue is to cover scarring around his hairline from a possible facelift or hair transplant.
Regardless of whether he confesses or not (it’s doubtful, to say the least), Stanley can certainly afford to do whatever he wants after spending over 45 years on the stage and amassing an impressive $125 million net worth. Heck, he could even spend a small fortune on cosmetic surgery to improve his look and boost his self-confidence only to hide it all behind the iconic makeup of The Starchild. It’s his face and fortune, after all!
In the meantime, Stanley certainly has bigger fish to fry after launching a handful of business ventures with Gene Simmons including a short-lived Arena Football League team known as the Los Angeles Kiss, which folded in October 2016. Although the team was a flop, the duo refused to give up and set their sights on the food industry as they opened a restaurant called Rocks & Brews in St. Louis, Missouri. With Stanley’s looks having nothing to do with the quality of food or the atmosphere, it’s safe to say that his rumored cosmetic surgery likely won’t have an impact on the rocker’s success either on or off the stage. Then again, why would it after die-hard fans fell in love with the rocker who was dressed to impress as The Starchild of KISS?
