“As you get older, you realize your parents aren't these superheroes. They're actually people.” In 1988, one of Hollywood’s hottest couples of the decade—Bruce Willis and Demi Moore—welcomed their first child, daughter Rumer Glenn, to the world. Named after British author Rumer Godden, Willis was born in Paducah, Kentucky and was raised in Idaho before she finally settled in Southern California with the hopes of following her parents’ footsteps and launching her career on the silver screen.
Having made her film debut at seven years old alongside her mother in Now and Then, Willis made brief appearances in Striptease, The Whole Nine Yards and Hostage but didn’t land a major role until 2008 when she starred in the comedy, The House Bunny. Over the years, Willis has continued to search for mainstream success with appearances in films like From Within, Sorority Row and Wild Cherry as well as television series like CSI: NY, 90210 and Hawaii Five-O. In 2015, she even joined the reality television circuit when she put on her dancing shoes and took the dancefloor with Valentin Chmerkovskiy for a first-place finish on Dancing with the Stars.
As the daughter of not one, but two famous Hollywood stars, the 28-year-old Willis has felt tremendous pressure throughout her life to rise to the same level of stardom and glamour as her parents. In 2014, she was even asked about her thoughts on plastic surgery especially with the buzz surrounding her mother. “In Hollywood, I feel like there’s a big stigma about hiding things—but people aren’t stupid,” Willis said. “If all of a sudden you jump from being an A cup to like Double D’s, people know. I just think you have to be who you are and own it, and not be ashamed and feel like you have to apologize.”
When asked if she had ever gone under the knife herself, Willis said, “I know there’s something that came up recently about me getting plastic surgery and it’s not true.” At the time, the actress didn’t rule out any potential surgery but said that, “If I want to do that… I’m not going to lie about myself. And if I choose to do something to myself, it’s because I’ve thought about it. And if it’s going to make me feel better, I won’t be ashamed of the choices that I make.” How wise for a Hollywood daughter!
Rumors first started when Willis’ jawline went through a noticeable transformation on Dancing with the Stars, which left many harshly criticizing her typically round-shaped face. Since Willis looked much different compared to red carpet appearances in years prior, there was a lot of merit to the rumors (no pun intended). Not only that, many believed that since her mother had finally come clean about going under the knife, Willis decided to try it herself. Truth be told, there was far more to it than that.
After years of being compared to her famous mother, Willis admitted that it had taken its toll on her emotionally. “People would say I looked like a man or something…or potato head was the big term that everyone used a lot, basically making fun of the way I looked,” she said. Why? Because she had clearly taken after her father and inherited his jawline, many assumed that Willis would face a lifetime of rejection as an aspiring actress in Hollywood, especially one who looked the exact opposite of Demi Moore.
Exhausted from battling self-esteem issues, the 28-year-old Willis has finally embraced her beauty. “Maybe I can get plastic surgery,” she said. “If I change my face or get really skinny, that will be it, that will be the answer, and it’s not.” Taking her point one step further, Willis turned to social media where she posted a video that showed her lips nearly twice their size. She followed the post with a picture of herself in Vanity Fair magazine where her chin was noticeably smaller. With the use of Photoshop obvious, Willis said, “I find it really offensive for anyone to try and change the way you look so drastically. I love the way I look and I won’t support anyone who would feel a need to change the way I look to make me beautiful.”
Although Willis may resemble her father more so physically, it’s undeniable that she has the strength of her mother even in the face of criticism. Continuing to deny the plastic surgery rumors and learning to ignore comparisons to her famous parents, Willis has finally found her place in the spotlight where she can be herself. In fact, if you have any doubts of her talent and beauty, you can see it firsthand on Broadway as Roxie Hart in Chicago or catch her on the silver screen in There’s Always Woodstock, The Escort and the up-and-coming Hello Again, or even occasionally on primetime television as Zoe in Pretty Little Liars.
