“She made me who I am and holding her in my arms was more natural to me than my own heartbeat.” Growing up in Ontario, Canada where he was inspired to become an actor after watching Dick Tracy, Ryan Gosling discovered his love of performing as a child and embraced the self-confidence it gave him after years of being bullied at school. By the age of 12, he knew his future was in acting and convinced his mother to let him audition for the Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club. Not only did he land a spot in the Montreal auditions, he signed a two-year contract and took the stage alongside Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in what he describes as “the greatest two years of his life.”
After the series ended in 1995, Gosling returned to Canada but continued to appear in television shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps before proving his talents as an independent film star in the new millennium. He gained recognition for his work in films like Murder by Numbers and The Slaughter Rule but didn’t find mainstream success until 2004 when he starred as Noah Calhoun in The Notebook, which went on to become one of the most beloved chick flicks of all time. Capitalizing on the film’s success, Gosling established himself as a highly acclaimed actor and sex symbol in Hollywood with award-winning performances in Half Nelson and Lars in the Real Girl with starring roles in Gangster Squad, Drive and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Amid his incredible success in Hollywood over the last two decades, the Canadian heartthrob has proven to be the exception to the norm especially when it comes to male celebrities and plastic surgery. Though leading ladies often make headlines for their nips and tucks, Gosling is one of the few male celebrities who has taken center stage as critics suggest the 36-year-old has had some work done in recent years. Far from anything extreme like a facelift or jaw reconstruction, tabloid reporters and medical experts are quick to point out that the former “Mouse-keteer” has had some work done to his nose. After all, the before and after pictures don’t lie.
Dr. Ramtin Kassin, a renowned plastic surgeon in New Jersey and often featured on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, argues that Gosling opted for a rhinoplasty for all the right reasons. “[Gosling] made a bold decision to get rid of his hooked nose,” Kassin said. “But it looks like things couldn’t be better for Gosling, and the rhinoplasty is going to open up new career horizons for him.” He also noted the obvious changes to Gosling’s nose with the bridge being narrowed and the bump leveled with the tip raised, all of which was expertly done to position the young actor “as a leading man in Hollywood.”
London surgeon Dr. Yannis Alexandrides chimed in with Dr. Kassin saying, “Although subtle, in my opinion, it’s clear from these images that there have been a number of changes made to Ryan’s nose.” Dr. Alexandrides explained that the changes were small and effectively done over the course of several procedures, which is likely why it took almost a decade before anyone noticed. Clever, right?
As one of the beloved “Princes of Chick Flicks” (and all things hipster, for that matter), Gosling’s fans were quick to defend their favorite Hollywood hunk and argued that there was no way the actor would ever willingly opt for a rhinoplasty. Luckily, the media seems to agree as The Big Short star has managed to steer clear of additional plastic surgery rumors. However, that hasn’t stopped some of his most loyal fans from doing everything possible to look exactly like him—even if it means plastic surgery. New Jersey native Nicholas Ryan is one such fan who spent several thousand dollars on plastic surgery to reconstruct his face to resemble Gosling’s. While it seems insane, one look at Gosling or his incredible success and we can’t say we blame Nicholas for trying to become his doppelganger!
Despite the rhinoplasty rumors and even the crazed fans willing to do anything to enjoy a hint of fame, the A-list star continues to climb the ranks in Hollywood as one of the most talented actors of his generation. With three additional films set to release in 2017, fans can’t wait to see him opposite Emma Stone in the romantic comedy La La Land or in upcoming blockbusters like Weightless and Blade Runner 2049. At 36 years old and still far too young to ever consider any major surgery (why change a face that’s worth $30 million and counting?), it’s safe to say that Gosling is doing just fine with a successful career and a happy life at home with actress Eva Mendes and their two daughters by his side. As long as Eva likes his nose, isn’t that all that really matters?
