Bullock Builds a Career

"Everyone told me to pass on 'Speed' because it was a 'bus movie.'" When Sandra Bullock relocated to New York following college graduation, she was moving into a crowded field. In 1987, Bullock started taking classes with the legendary acting coach, Sanford Meisner. With his coaching, Bullock was able to land her first major role, an Off-Broadway play by the name of No Time Flat. Bullock's performance in the play would get the attention of Alan J. Levi, a director who would go on to hire Bullock for Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman (1989).  Like all great talents, it only took one domino to fall before Bullock was suddenly a hot commodity.

Riding high on her sudden industry attention, Bullock would find herself staring down at the script for Speed (1994). While Bullock's inner circle argued that she should pass on the film, Bullock chose to audition, anyway. Bullock recalls how intense the audition process was as she had to prove her chemistry with co-star Keanu Reeves.  Bullock would get the part and the film would become a breakaway hit as it grossed $350 million worldwide. Bullock was firmly a star by this point and the roles were coming by the armful.

After Speed, Bullock began to build her brand in a major way. Bullock would land her first Golden Globe Award nomination for her work in the 1995 film, While You Were Sleeping. Bullock showed her dramatic chops by portraying a token collector who saved a man's life.  While Bullock continued to find regular work through the '90s, she wouldn't become an A-List celebrity until Miss Congeniality (2000) was released. The film became a cult-classic and Bullock would get a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Shortly thereafter, Bullock received high praise from the legendary film critic, Roger Ebert.

It wasn't until the late 00s that Sandra Bullock firmly established herself as a performer with serious dramatic clout. Bullock would become a critical darling when she starred in the biopic, The Blind Side (2009). Bullock would win the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for the aforementioned film. By this point in time, Bullock had won a Golden Globe, Oscar, Critics' Choice Movie Award, and a Screen Actor's Guild Award. Despite her small-town Southern roots, Bullock was building a name and reputation that could compete with anyone in Hollywood. This was proven when Bullock was cast in blockbuster projects like Gravity (2013) and Ocean's 8 (2018).

Sandra Bullock has shown no signs of slowing down in recent years. Bullock just starred in the hit Netflix film, Bird Box (2018) and she is personally attached to half of a dozen films currently in development. When Bullock isn't working in Hollywood, she claims that her favorite hobby is flipping houses.
