"I flew back and forth and did episodes of Roseanne while I was at Yale." Sara Gilbert has been working on television for longer than most new actors have been alive. Known for her work on the hit ABC sitcom Roseanne, Gilbert has managed to extend her career for almost thirty years. As a multi-talented entertainer, Gilbert has appeared as an actor on both the big and little screen, and she has even worked as a talk show host on The Talk.
While Gilbert is known primarily for her comedic chops, she has also showcased her ability as an academic. During the filming of Roseanne, Gilbert would fly back and forth between Yale and set in order to pursue her degree. Gilbert would graduate with honors from Yale. Nowadays, Gilbert is flexing her skills as both a producer and an actress. Gilbert is currently married to Linda Perry, and she has three children.
Coming Up In Santa Monica
Sara Gilbert was born on Janaury 29, 1975, in Santa Monica, CA. Her father was Harold Ables and her mother was Barbara Cowan. Gilbert comes from a long line of successful entertainers. Her grandfather on her mother's side was Harry Crane, the creator of the hit project, The Honeymooners. Gilbert has four half-siblings, and she has taken her last name from her mother's very first husband, Paul Gilbert. Gilbert belongs to the third generation of Hollywood talent in her family.
From a young age, all Gilbert seemingly wanted to do was pursue a career in entertainment. Thanks to help from her family, Gilbert was able to focus on becoming a child star while she was still relatively young. Gilbert would begin acting professionally at the age of six. Since she was in Hollywood at a young age, Gilbert has little in the way of a private life before her fame.
Becoming a Television Star
Sara Gilbert would begin acting in earnest by her sixth birthday. She would make her on-screen debut in an advertisement for Kool-Aid. After working in the commercial field for several years, Gilbert would end up winning her debut role in the made-for-TV movie, Calamity Jane (1984). From there, Gilbert wouldn't appear on screen again until 1988 when she earned a leading role in the historic TV series, Roseanne (1988 – 2018).
Gilbert scored her role on Roseanne in 1988 and it would turn into the most defining character of her career. Gilbert would play Darlene Conner, daughter of blue-collar parents Roseanne and Dan Conner. Roseanne would quickly become a cultural touchstone and Darlene's quick-witted quips would routinely steal the show. Her performance as Darlene would last for nine years before the program originally went off of the ear. During that period of time, Gilbert would score a pair of Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress as well as three straight Young Artist awards. Gilbert showcased her comedic and dramatic chops, and she would be invited back to reboot the series in 2018, though the titular Roseanne would be departing from the production. The spin-off series is to be titled The Conners with Gilbert set to star in the central role.
As Roseanne started to drift toward finality, Gilbert made sure to spread her wings into other ventures. She would appear on several notable television programs including The Simpsons (1992), Welcome to New York (2000), and 24 (2002). While Gilbert tried to make her way into film, she only found minimal success in the medium for her work in the 2000's High Fidelity.
While her career in acting seemingly dried up, at least for a time, Gilbert stayed active by working on the hit daytime talk show, The Talk. Gilbert would share the mic with Julie Chen, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, and Sharon Osbourne. Gilbert would star on the program from 2010 to 2019. During that period, Gilbert also began working regularly on the hit sitcom, The Big Bang Theory (2007 – 2016) as Leslie Winkle. Gilbert has since parlayed that performance into starring roles on The Conners (2018) and the Netflix show, Atypical.
When he's not on stage, Gilbert tends to keep her private life, well, private. Gilbert was briefly attached to Rosanne and Big Bang Theory co-star, Johnny Galecki. It was during this relationship that Gilbert realized that she was a lesbian. She and Galecki still remain close friends to this day. Since then, Gilbert has dated Allison Adler and Linda Perry. Adler and Gilbert would have two children together, a son and daughter, before ultimately ending their relationship in an amicable fashion. Gilbert is currently married to Linda Perry from the band 4 Non Blondes. The two have a son together, Rhodes Emilio Gilbert Perry.
Gilbert currently has the second season of The Conners to look forward to, thanks to a surge in ratings during the first series. Gilbert will be producing the show going forward. Off of the set, Gilbert is a political activist, an animal rights advocate, and an environmentalist. She has worked extensively with a variety of non-profit groups including the Earth Communication Office and the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals advocacy group. Gilbert's character of Darlene was named one of the most animal-friendly characters in entertainment history.
