"We're totally not averse to working together again. I don't think we'll be working as twins ever again, like cast in a role. But I think we both would be fine working together, whatever that means." Dylan Sprouse and his brother, Cole Sprouse, many not be planning to play twins on television or film anytime soon, but they rose to stardom doing exactly that on the hit Disney Channel shows, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and its spin-off, The Suite Life on Deck. Since that time, they've each branched out in different directions and found solo success, as well.
Dylan and Cole Sprouse, AKA the Sprouse brothers, achieved bonafide teen heartthrob status as Disney Channel starts. They were also among the world's wealthiest children in the mid-2000s thanks to their status as Disney's highest-paid teenage actors. So what have the Sprouse brothers been up to since that time? Here's a closer look at the sweet life of Dylan and Cole.
Success Before Age One
The Sprouse brothers were born in Arezzo, Italy to American parents who were teachers at an English language school in Tuscany. Dylan, who came into the world 15 minutes before Cole, is named after the poet Dylan Thomas while Cole is named for the jazz great Nat King Cole. They returned to their parents' native Long Beach, California when they were just four months old.
While many aspiring actors dream of making it big someday, Dylan and Cole Sprouse were working well before their first birthdays. Their grandmother, an acting teacher and actress, was familiar with child labor laws which favored the casting of twins in a single role, and suggested that they try acting. They first landed a commercial for diapers before being hired to share the role of Patrick Kelly on the television show, Grace Under Fire.
Dylan and Cole had their first big break in 1999 when they landed their first major role in the Adam Sandler film, Big Daddy. They followed up Big Daddy with minor roles in the movies The Astronaut's Wife, the Master of Disguise, Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights, I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Just for Kicks. Of their performance in the latter David Nusair of Reel Film Reviews wrote, "[They] aren't the worst child actors I've ever seen...but they certainly leave a lot to be desired."
Additionally, Dylan and Cole appeared on television shows during their tween years, including The Nightmare Room and That '70s Show. Cole also portrayed Ross Geller's son Ben on Friends; this role was not shared with his brother.
The Sprouse brother really hit the big-time, however, with their casting in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. The series debuted in March of 2005, and became a massive hit. This led to many additional Disney projects, including the Disney Channel Circle of Stars, the Disney Channel Games, and The Suite Life on Deck, which was so popular that it merited its own 80-page special edition issue of People magazine.
The Sprouses were attached to many other movie projects during the mid-2000s, including The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, A Modern Twain Story: The Prince and the Pauper; the animated film Holidaze: The Christmas That Almost Didn't Happen; and The Kings of Appletown. Dylan also voiced the part of Shasta in the movie, Snow Buddies.
At the height of their careers, Dylan and Cole also enjoyed endorsement deals, including with Dannon Danimals and Nintendo DS. They also launched their own Sprouse Bros line of branded merchandise through a licensing agreement with Dualstar Entertainment Group.
Over the years, the Sprouse brothers have received significant acclaim for their acting work, including nominations for YoungStar Awards, MTV Movie Awards, Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, Young Artist Awards, Kids' Choice Awards, Popstar Magazine's Poptastic Awards. While Cole never actually brought home a prize, Dylan won three Kids' Choice Awards for his work on The Suite Life franchise.
After the Suite Life
As the twins grew older, they started aging out of parts. Having deferred attending New York University in 2010, they both matriculated in 2011 into its Gallatin School of Individualized Study, which allowed them to plan their own curriculum. There, Dylan focused on video game design, while Cole studied the humanities and archeology. While in college, Dylan working as a host at a local restaurant.
Said Cole of their decision to enroll in college unlike many of their fellow child stars, "I think regardless of success, all those kids were dealing with a similar dilemma when it came to their maturity and their publicity and fame, and how they were viewed in the public eye. Some people choose sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll to come to terms with it. Some people find religion. [College] seemed like the most productive way to prove to people we were coming into ourselves."
After the Sprouse brothers graduated from NYU in 2015, they branched out in different directions. Cole returned to acting with the role of Jughead on the popular teen drama series, Riverdale, while Dylan and two partners opened the All-Wise Meadery in Brooklyn's Williamsburg. In addition to being the brewery's co-owner, Dylan is also its brewmaster. Not one to be mistaken for an underachiever, he now holds the title of America's youngest Master Brewer.
As far as what the future holds for the brothers, Cole has shared one condition when it comes to his acting career. "As long as it stays fulfilling, I will continue doing it, but the second it stops being fulfilling I'll leave," he told Elle.com.
In the meantime, they've both discussed working together again, albeit not in the capacity many of their fans might expect or hope for. In a recent interview, Dylan suggested that one or both of them might be behind the camera instead of in front of it. "I think the truth is, we're both perfectionists in what we do. When it comes to him especially, he's got a very good eye in terms of photography and I think he would be a great cinematographer or director. I have less interest in directing or cinematography. I find myself writing more," he said.
