“Every day, kids get a little further away from you. That’s a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it’s heartbreaking." - Katie Holmes

Suri Cruise has to be one of the most high-profile celebrity kids of the last twenty years, if not the most high-profile based on the news she generated in her first year of life alone. The daughter of two of the biggest stars of their time, Suri Cruise has been the subject of tabloid headlines and media exposes since before she was even born.

You may have noticed in her bio that she has no middle name. That's not an oversight. Her parents not only chose not to give Suri a middle name, but also selected the first name of "Suri" before they even knew her gender. And before you ask, it's not short for anything.

Born Into The Spotlight

"I work very hard, but I also really enjoy time with my family as well. So I take everything as it comes, but I really am very selfish about my family time." - Katie Holmes

Eyes were on Suri Cruise before she was even born. Holmes had come off of an engagement with Dawson's Creek (1998-2003) co-star Chris Klein in 2000 and people were waiting to see who she would date next. The question was answered in April of 2005 when she and Tom Cruise were seen together, and they were engaged only two months later in June of 2005, just seven weeks after their first time meeting. Only a year later, the couple's daughter Suri would be born in Santa Monica on April 18, 2006. The name comes from the Persian language, translating to "red rose," and also features in the Hebrew language, a version of Sarah which translates to "princess." The two held an extravagant wedding ceremony at Odescalchi Castle in Italy, although the actual legal proceedings had been carried out the day before.

Following the birth of Suri, Katie Holmes would take a two year break from acting to be a full-time mother. Many fans will remember that Rachel Dawes, the character she had portrayed in Batman Begins (2005), had been recast with Maggie Gyllenhaal for the film's sequel, The Dark Knight (2008). Holmes' final role prior to her hiatus had been the classic indie comedy Thank You for Smoking (2005), and she would finally make her return in Mad Money (2008), a comedic crime caper where she was part of a heist crew with Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah. Although there was concern that Holmes would lose the momentum she had built in the early part of her career by taking such a long break, she seems to have bounced back just fine, playing herself in Ocean's 8 (2018) and starring in a number of high-profile films and TV series, including Jack and Jill (2011), The Giver (2014), Logan Lucky (2017), and Ray Donovan (2015).

As for Suri's father, the Mission: Impossible series alone stands as a testament to the actor's star-power and earning potential.

"If you have kids, it is the most important thing to create good times." - Tom Cruise

The Quiet Life

While Suri Cruise is reaching the age where many celebrity kids start to record music, model on Instagram or feature in small roles in their parents' films, Suri has generally kept a low-profile, which may be surprising considering that she was already world-famous before she was even born. It would seem that she didn't wind up developing a taste for the spotlight, and spends most of her time living a quiet life at home, though she did enjoy a stunning thirteenth birthday celebration in Paris, France. Although Katie has noted that she doesn't make a habit of spoiling Suri, there's little point in being rich and famous without throwing your kid an over-the-top party every now and then. I don't over-gift. I don't inundate my child with a lot of things." - Katie Holmes

There are no doubt casting directors and talent agents already waiting to see if Suri has any interest in following her parents into the entertainment industry, but for the time being, the only time we see Suri in the public life is when she's spotted out and about with her mother Katie. Time will tell if Suri develops an interest in film and television or becoming a recording artist, but as of the time of this writing, the quiet life seems to suit her just fine.

"Becoming a mother has been the most amazing experience - in an instant, you become strong. You have to be a little bit wiser; it's the most important job in the world." - Katie Holmes
