As a child, Carrere would attend the Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu. Sacred Hearts is a prominent all-girls school. During her childhood, it became clear that Carrere had an interest in performing for a living. She originally dreamed of becoming a singer and Carrere would get her chance to shine during a 1985 appearance on Star Search. Despite only being 17, Carrere still got her chance to shine. Unfortunately, Carrere would end up being eliminated in the first round of the competition.

Life has a funny way of coming at you when you least expected. While Yeoh was still reeling from being eliminated on Star Search, she would run into a producer at the grocery store in Waikiki. That producer would end up casting her in the film, Aloha Summer (1988). What had once looked like a dead-end for Carrere had suddenly turned into a door that was wide open.
